I finished reading A Shot in the Dark yesterday, and it is absolutely one of my bolded books on my list this year (of a bit more than 100, but I don't have a new baby!). It's such a strong and sensitive book, and doesn't read like a crash landing at all (except emotionally).

100 books is awesome! I finished the rough draft of the book I started in Feb and am trying to plan & reoutline so I can hit revisions in the new year.

I read a ton of memoirs this year, too! Gonna be combing through your list for the medical memoirs, that is RIGHT up my alley 👀

This year’s been a big one for me—rebuilding my life after ending a long-term, traumatic relationship, having a career crisis (which I’m moving past now), outlining a WIP for the second time and starting the second draft. I went out of my comfort zone and built up so much independence and have already gained so much confidence. Like you said, it doesn’t feel like enough, but I’m proud of this. And I’m proud that the changes in myself are visible to other people.

My goal for the next year is to focus on rebuilding my career and to relearn how to write for myself. Publishing has been my goal for a long time, but I think I need to step back and just focus on telling myself the story first.

Also, I know you said the books you wrote section might be more disappointing, but it wasn’t, from a reader perspective. You’ve got a lot going on, and writing with a new baby is a LOT. And some years are dedicated to different things—someone reminded me recently how things go in seasons, and sometimes those seasons are joyful and frustrating and hard and new. Sorry for the essay, but I just wanted to say it sounds like you did a pretty good job with what you had!
